Lady Duff Gordon and Lucile
British born designer Lady Duff Gordon began her dressmakers business from home in 1890 as the Victorian era was coming to a close. Her designs shocked, but also intrigued – they were a breathe of fresh air as the world moved from the incredibly conservative Victorian period and into the more relaxed atmosphere of the Edwardian period. Lady Duff Gordon freed women of restrictive corsets, wired underskirts and dowdy undergarments, introducing them instead to provocative, sheer lingerie. She created scandal and controversy but also world-wide acclaim with boutiques in New York, London, Paris and Chicago. Her beautiful creations were worn by the most glamourous women of the time and were a must-have of the Belle Époque era. She dominated the industry, her British-ness shining through in a French dominated fashion era. She described how ‘it became the last word in chic to be dressed by an English society woman".
Inspired by the work of Lady Duff Gordon (1863-1935) and the original revolutionary Lucile brand, Lucile lingerie is now the passion of Camilla Blois, the great-great granddaughter of Lady Duff Gordon. The distinctive British Heritage is very much at the core of the brand with everything from design to sourcing, and production still proudly done in the UK.
