Water caltrop nuts are native to East Asia and are known as "bat nuts" because of their resemblance to the winged wonders of the night. Also known as "devil's pods" and "horn nuts", the pods are thought to ward off negativity and attract positive energy.
As they so closely resemble bats, the nuts are used as talismans in much the same way as the winged mammals. Guardians of our ecosystems, swooping through the night and keeping invasive insect populations in check, bats over time came to symbolize protection and there are those that put bat nut totems above doorways and at their entryways to ward off evil energy and spirits.
In the magical tradition, bat nuts have also been used as offerings on alters and in spells of protection.
