Description

A light and sensual perfumed pommade handmade by one of the last perfumers in the world practicing the labor intensive art of enfleurage scent extraction using the traditional methods of the ancients. With this technique, fresh rose and lilac blossoms grown on a female owned and operated organic farm in upstate NY are placed on glass chassis in fat and the blossoms are changed for fresh ones every day for 33 days. At the end of the process, the fat has been slowly infused with the sensual and powdery scent from the exhaling flowers. The base of the pommade is sustainable, organic palm kernel oil, a superior oil for the skin because it is high in vitamin A and mimics the skin's natural sebum.

Rose Vale Pommade

Our floral pommades are made using the ancient, labor intensive, and all but vanished scent extraction process of enfleurage – two to three gallons of fresh, organic flowers are placed into an organic fat on glass chassis every day for 33 days. At the end of the process, between eight and ten bushels of flowers have been used (about a bathtub full of flowers) and the fat molecules are infused with the pure, rich scent from the exhaling flowers.

The roses and lilacs used to create Rose Vale are from a female owned, organic farm dedicated to the propagation and preservation of local lilacs. One of the varieties found on the farm, the Henry Martin, is so rare that it is just one of two plants of its kind that exist in the world. Forty to fifty different varieties are used each year to make the lilac pommade, depending on which plants are resting, and the scent of each year’s batch is wonderfully varied by the unique blend of rare, classic, heritage, and new generation lilacs used and the way early bloomers, mid-season bloomers, and late season bloomers are combined (some have honey notes and some tend to be on the spicier side). For our Rose Vale blend, freshly grown roses from the farm are added to the lilacs, creating a sensual, powdery blend with powerful aphrodisiac properties. In keeping with the ancient perfumers, spiritual invocations are said each year by the farmers as the plants are being harvested to infuse the “soul” of the blossoms with appeals for world healing, peace, giving, love, and abundance.

The wild rose has been used for thousands of years to heal and scent the skin. The ancient Egyptians were known to boil whole roses to create balms that would protect their skin from the harsh and dry desert conditions. Aristocratic Roman women created rose petal poultices, believing the rose to be a powerful tool to combat aging. The Persians invented steam distillation to extract the precious oil for skin and medieval women treated their scars and scented their bodies with the luxurious rose water and oil. Rose oil is antiseptic, astringent, anti-inflammatory and cell rejuvenating and is a fantastic healing oil for the skin. A wondrous and refreshing scent, rose is intoxicating and aromatherapeutic and has been shown to act as an antidepressant and to relieve nervous tension, creating an environment more conducive to intimacy.

Lilac is known as an uplifting and mood enhancing scent and is naturally aphrodisiac. About half of the lilac varieties used are white and when white flowers are broken down they create a chemical compound called indole, a musky, heady scent associated with sexual intimacy (the ancient perfumers used to caution that virgin maidens should never be allowed to pick in fields of white flowers). In addition to its intoxicating scent, the lilac flower is astringent and using the pommade as a light facial salve can help to tighten and shrink pores.

Use Rose Vale as a subtle and naturally aphrodisiac solid perfume, as a rejuvenating face balm, or on the body anywhere that skin is irritated or needs extra hydration.
